AFH posted on Twitter that our little girl graduated from Pre-K yesterday. Cue the groans from people that don’t understand why anyone is making a big deal. Fuck, I USED TO BE ONE OF THEM! But here’s the deal: my girl, who was a newborn just days ago (right?!) was now standing in front of me in a cap and gown and I’m not sure if I got teary-eyed from the fact that we’d made her and she was fucking smart OR that we didn’t have to pay for full-time daycare anymore for this one.

My parents spent HOW MUCH on my childcare?!?!

We had to wear face masks and stand behind a rope so that we were all social distancing but it was still really sweet. Roo got a goody bag and a diploma and we got a garden sign to put in our front yard. When we came home, AFH started to put it by our shrubs close to the house to which I responded, “We spent tens of thousands of dollars to get that fucking sign. It’s going by the road so EVERYONE can see it.”

“This sign isn’t for you kiddo. This is for us and the YEARS of struggling to figure out how to pay bills, as well as childcare so that we could both work to keep a roof over our head.”

Fuck the American Dream. It’s not like we have our kids in the BEST daycare – all daycares cost this per week or $1,000/kid/month. If your daycare is cheaper than this, chances are your kids are playing with wildlife while sleeping in bushes. And don’t even get me started on having a nanny – that would be CRAZY money. Now, because of the Coronavirus, huge amounts of daycares may fold because they won’t be able to recover. What the HELL are we going to do without them? It’s been a lifesaver to us and to families across the country. But it also needs to be fixed and subsidized by the government. Childcare is essential to people getting back to work or even going to work at all and it needs to be affordable for all. I don’t have the answers though – all I know is that my kid is ready for kindergarten and won’t be sitting there rocking back and forth like a rhesus monkey not knowing what a “number” is. That’s all any of us can ask for. – FemaleGG.
